On the fourth day of Navratri, we worship Goddess Kushmanda, the form of Goddess Durga, who is believed to have created the universe with her divine smile. Kushmanda is depicted riding a lion and holding a kalash (sacred pot) and a pumpkin, which symbolises nourishment and abundance. Her blessings help the earth thrive with crops and resources.

Long ago, when the universe was just darkness, there was no life or light. It was in this void that Goddess Kushmanda appeared. Her divine smile brought light into the cosmos, and the” stars, planets, and life began to take shape.” As the creator of the universe, she nurtures all living things and gives them the energy to grow and prosper.

Goddess Kushmanda is often depicted with eight arms, each holding different weapons and objects like a “bow, arrow, lotus, and rosary.” These symbolise her immense power to protectcreate, and bless her devotees. Her form represents both the creative force of the universe and the protective energy that keeps negativity at bay.

The pumpkin, which Kushmanda holds, symbolises fertility and growth. Moreover, it was once believed that the pumpkin contained all the essential elements for life. It represents the earth’s bounty and abundance, and it is a symbol of her generosity.
