With her dark skin, Maa Kaalratri symbolises strength and fearlessness. She has four arms in two hands, she holds a kripan (a curved sword) and a vajra (a thunderbolt), while the other two hands are in gestures of giving and protection. Her three eyes see everything, piercing through the darkness, and flames emerge from her nostrils when she breathes, showcasing her strong will.

The Brave Story of Maa Kaalratri

The story of Maa Kaalratri’s origin is full of bravery and divine help. It began when the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha attacked “Devlok” and defeated Indra and the other gods. In need of help, Indra turned to Maa Parvati, “who created Chandi to defend the gods. But the demons sent Chanda and Munda to confront her.”

Chandi called upon the fierce Maa Kaalratri to join the battle. With great determination, Maa Kaalratri defeated Chanda and Munda, but the fight wasn’t over yet. The powerful demon “Raktabeej” had a special boon—every time his blood touched the ground, he would multiply. This made the battle harder, but Maa Kaalratri used her strength and courage to stop him. She drank every drop of his blood, preventing him from regenerating, and finally defeated him.

With Raktabeej’s defeat, Chandi overcame Shumbha and Nishumbha, bringing peace back to the heavens. This story highlights Maa Kaalratri’s fearless spirit and her role in protecting the universe.
